---Pratt, Myrtle (? - 12 April 1887)
In Memorium.
Died - April 12, 1887, of diphtheria, Myrtle,
youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Pratt, aged two years, nine months and
twenty-two days.
"? Little children to come unto me, and forbid
them not, for of such in the kingdom of heaven."
"Papa’s Darling Little Baby!" That was the name
she bore.
How oft in her baby language Had she
said it o’er and o’er.
Oh, our precious little Myrtle, Rarest gift that
Heaven e’er gave!
She was ours but for a season, Now she sleeps
within the grave,
Not our will, but Thine, Our Father, Were the
words we tried to say,
When came the silent boatman And bore our child
away,
Oh Grave, where is thy victory! Oh Death, where is
thy sting!
When a spirit freed from the bondage In Paradise
doth sing.
She is resting now with Jesus. Fondly clasped
within His Arms;
Brighter are her winsome features, Sweeter are her
baby charms,
She is singing up in Heaven, Lisping for a song of
love -
Love that doth abide forever In that blessed home
above.
Why should we mourn departed loved ones, Freed
from pain and care and strife?
Death is no the "King of Terrors, But an awaking
into life,
***{Rest cut off.}

OLD:
"Ed" was
born in Bolton, Warren Co., NY, 16 Mar 1838, the son of Thomas and Irinda
Pratt. Irinda was a daughter of William and Eunice (Skiff) Hough. Although he
was an industrious person, he was rather small in stature and only stood 5’ 3
1/2" tall when he reached manhood. He had a fair complexion and brown hair and
his eyes were blue. At the age of 20 he married 17 yr. old Betsey Ann a week
before Christmas, 18 Dec 1858. She had a pleasing nature and made friends
easily. Betsey Ann was born in Warrensburg, NY, 18 Apr
1841, the daughter of Nathanial and Angenetta
Middleton. The Pratts had a farm and also operated a store and livery in
Georgetown, NY.
Their first baby was born in 1864 and
named for Betsey’s mother but nearly everyone called her "Jennie."
The following year Ed enlisted in the
Union Army as a harness maker with Co.
I, 8th NY Cav., in Lockport, 1 May 1864.
After a year in the service, Pvt. Pratt
was mustered out by order of the Secretary of War, 9 May 1865 at Elmira, NY.
Therefore he never actually joined his unit. Hyland "Hiley" (1866)
was born after Ed returned to his family in
Georgetown, NY. His birth was followed by Minnie (1868)
and six years later Charles H. (1874)
was born. Their youngest, Myrtle (1884) didn’t come along until another
10 yrs. had past. After her birth they
family moved to a farm in Weston Twp., Clark Co., WI. They moved to Greenwood
in 1888 and Edward built a large store
and conducted a grocery business. He later sold out to the Klinke Bros. During
1908, he served as Adjutant of the John A. Eaton Post #213. His life
ended 20 Nov 1917 and he was buried in the Greenwood, WI City Cemetery. His
beloved Betsy died 13 Dec 1926 after 9 yrs. of widowhood and was laid to rest
beside him.
"C.S.
Stockwell was up the turnpike doing some surveying this week, and returned early
yesterday morning. Ed Pratt, of Greenwood, brought Mr. Stockwell home, receiving
for his pay only the honor of riding with the president of the Neillsville Club.
We heard Mr. Pratt say that any time Mr. S. wanted to be brought back he had
only to call at Mr. Pratt’s barn in Greenwood. Ed told a confidential friend
yesterday that when he went to his barn to feed his team he found Mr. Stockwell
crawling from the hay mow." Neillsville Republican and Press,
